National Award for Indiana Coach- (from Indianapolis Star) Scecina football coach Ott Hurrle has been named the 2014 Power of Influence Award recipient, a national award presented by the American Football Coaches Association and American Football Coaches Foundation.
Hurrle, who has been the head coach at Scecina since 1988, was nominated by the Indiana Football Coaches Association. Coaches are recognized based on their impact on their team and players, as well as the legacy they leave with the school and community. It is not based on wins and losses, though longevity and success are factors.
It is very humbling to be nominated, especially from Indiana, where there are so many great quality people coaching in the state, he said.
It is the first time a coach from Indiana has received the award, which has been in existence since 2002. Hurrle started his coaching career as an assistant at Scecina in 1974 and also spent three years as defensive coordinator at Butler in the mid-1990s. Hurrle won Class 2A state championships with Scecina in 1990 and 91 and took the program to state title games in 2011 and 12.
Hurrle will be presented with the award on Jan. 13 at the 2015 AFCA convention in Louisville, Ky.
